One Day Project: Log Table

This morning I decided to set myself the challenge of creating a small coffee table from a log I acquired last summer, it’s been sitting in the garage drying for the year, it’s much lighter than it was when I carried through the woods to the car!
Here is the result of seven hours work including a trip to trusty B&Q. It still needs a bit more work thats for sure, but it’s not too shabby if I do say so myself. There’s a touch of 1970s in there somewhere…

I Have a Letterpress!

After visiting my old art teacher a few days ago, I came back with loads of cool random bits and bobs. I used to enjoy going into the art and the teacher walking off randomly coming back clutching a strange variety or of things to inspire! The most exciting bit was this Adana letterpress, I believe its a 5×3? Along with boxes and boxes of type! Time for some business cards?

I’d like to wish my old art teacher a happy retirement, I am positive that he will be missed at the school, and was an inspiration for me and many other students over the years.

The Piano

For a while now a piano has sat in our garage, quite a few parts have been taken away, I have already used the keys and the hammers in a pieces of artwork already, Eds and I have been wondering for a while what to do with the main casing of the piano, in the end we decided to produce a small piece of work to fit into the garden.

You see we do keep a lot of quirky things in the garden, it started as random old toys in the pond and has expanded to old walking boots and tires with flowers growing through them and old (used in railways) railway sleepers. The idea is grow flowers and possible a few vegetables, sweet peas would look awesome growing through the strings.

We’re not entirely sure where we are going with it, I will keep posting images on here, hopefully it will look good once it has weathered into the garden fully.

Also, we keep finding random construction dates, the oldest we have found is shown in the images, 6/10/1917! Strange to think this is so old, some may scoff at us putting it into our garden however…

An End To Another Great Year At University

It’s been particularly busy one, I’ve got through so many projects, most have been documented here, others I’m still working on and you all may see them soon.

I’ve got another “Big Ol’ Summer To-Do List” lined up for the Summer, ensuring I wont be too idle, there are a few are construction based ones which I’m really looking forward, others are improving on current skills, I am determined to learn 3Ds Max to it’s full potential, while still getting some traditional drawing/painting mediums in there as well. Hopefully I can do this on the travels I have planned, should be able to squeeze this in with ‘training’ for the Coast to Coast in the August.

I was going to refrain from being soppy on here, after all this blog is used to exhibit my current work. However, this year wouldn’t have been anywhere near as good without all of my friends, you have all been inspiring in some way, no matter how small. This applies particularly my housemates (including the neighbours) you have all made it so much more worthwhile, and you will be missed dearly, it won’t be long until we’re back for final year, eh?

Sketches: A Few from Paris

During a trip to Paris I wanted to do as much sketching as possible, to try and get my water colour skills up to a half decent level. I had to try the stereotypical French thing and have a glass of wine outside of a cafe in a small French town, Bliss!

(The wine was substantially cheaper than the beer…)

Project: International Cosmetics Supplies

A live project working with International Cosmetics Supplies, creating designs for a new brand.

Slowly getting the hang of rendering with marker pens and pastels, those transparent surfaces are damn hard to do though!

Any advice?

Restore: Anglepoise Lamp

A long time coming but here’s the Anglepois Lamp I restored over the summer.

Not a restoration as such, Anglepoise mainly a new wire, a black 3 corded felted wire and a good clean up with the polish, all the parts were removed and cleaned throughly, removing all rust from the springs with time a the good ol’ tin of WD40. The paintwork is yet to be resprayed, chances are it will be left in its current state, not risk removing the original paint, as the paint is only slightly chipped, and doesn’t degraded the overall design.

It now has a earth wire so it should be slightly safer than how it was when I bought it.

New thumb screw on the right, and overall adjustment has allowed for a low energy bulb to be used, the extra weight, pushes the shade down, so everything needs to be tighten up tighter. Using a low energy bulb, reduces the temperature making it much more useful if I’m reading in bed, without burning my head!

New rubber grommets, the old ones had degraded so much that they broke apart on removal
